Efficiency Experimentation

It goes a bit against principle..

for me to be telling anecdotal stories as proof. When it comes to my educational background, the orthodox position is to trust statistics; not personal stories.

Since I'm not a scientist yet, however, I'll venture to break the rules. I did a simple experiment fall quarter of senior year to see if I could get better grades (let's just measure it in GPA). I based my methods off of both well-known principles of being awesome (like going to class) and a few oddball ideas.

The principles were as follows:

    1. Keep a schedule
  • Theoretical perks: little stressing over what will be done for the day, more automation, less last minute problems, fewer hair loss, less screaming

    1. Studying should be daily with few exceptions
  • Theoretical perks: material will be finished by the end of the quarter, long term repetition would be better for memory

    1. Shoot for perfect attendance
  • Theoretical perks: the less classes missed the less time needed for conceptual catch-up work, professors give pop quizzes or participation grades often

    1. Use flashcards instead of rereading material
  • Theoretical perks: This study indicated that rereading ranks as one of the lamest study methods whereas flashcards are at the top.

    1. Read 10-15 new pages of textbook material a day per class
  • Theoretical perks: Most classes I've experienced do not finish the entire required reading, 10 pages is easy enough to be motivational, one can slow down and focus on comprehension

    1. Write a 5 item to do list everyday
  • Theoretical perks: 5 items is not intimidating, but it still adds up when 35 goals are accomplished a week, a 5 item to do list can get finished

    1. Update and review calendar daily
  • Theoretical perks: better timing when preparing for deadlines or keeping track of long term projects, fewer sudden disasters

    1. Using mindmaps

    Theoretical perks: connect information with other ideas that are understood and images helps with memory and comprehension

    1. Studying a bit before the quarter begins
  • Theoretical perks: feeling ahead at the beginning lowers stress and makes lectures easier to understand

    Using this methodology, I received a 3.70 while taking a whopping 22 units. I earned a 2.77 the prior quarter with fewer units without the methodology. You can clearly see that there is a correlation of success with the plan I attempted. While still acknowledging that the circumstances of each quarter are different, I'd say the advice I took was solid.
